War in Syria: Battle of Aleppo

The largest city in Syria has experienced from mid July 2012 an ongoing battle, called also the Mother of All Battles.

At the background of the fighting rage are spread the remains of one of the oldest, continually inhabited cities in the world.

Aleppo is at the cradle of our civilization.

Placed in the strategic point of Fertile Crescent, between the Middle East and the Mediterranean Sea, and at the tip of Silk Route, Aleppo has always been a modus operandi in the hands of establishment for economic and military reasons.

Udergoing many invasions, social and political upheavals, Aleppo districts are built like cell-quarters allowing them to be and stay independent from outsiders and invaders. To capture all city at once is impossible and that's why the battle of Alleppo became separate fights for each and every quarter and district.

Old city of Aleppo is UNESCO World Heritage Site and should pride itself, among other things, on the location of the Citadel on the partly man-made hill, considered to be one of the oldest and largest castles in the world. Its current structure comes from 13th century; oldest traces are found to be of 3rd millennium BC.

Most of the other monuments and historic buildings are reflection of the turbulent story of the city and our civilization. Each quarter belongs to followers of particular religion, including Christianity and Judaism and the city is a mosaic of cultures.

From nearby ancient city of Ebla come Sumerian cuneiform tablets dated from around 2250 BC noticing the merchant and mercenary facilities of Aleppo (Khalpe). Archeological finds stretch the time to the 6th millennium BC - the city layout had made it difficult to dig on a more expansive scale. The civil war and destruction of the city will cause to perish many of the monuments. When the time will eventually arrive to rebuild Aleppo, the excavations may follow.

The nationwide uprising, encouraged by the Arab Spring, started in March 2011 demanding Socialist Ba'ath Party to end its nearly half a century regime and state of emergency over Syria.

President-dictator Bashar al-Assad, son of the former president-dictator Hafez al-Assad, stated the uprising is plotted and controlled by foreign countries. The al-Assad family is largely responsible for the totalitarian state, corruption and political discrimination in Syria. The Arab countries, the Western countries, and Russia maintain the conflict should be resolved internally.
